Welcome To ABL

Having a population of close to quarter of a million people, Aberdeen is currently Scotland's 3rd largest city. The city is comparatively out of the way, being situated over 140 miles from Edinburgh and Glasgow where the majority of the population are situated. However, due to a vibrant economy, largely due to the influence of the offshore gas and oil industry, unemployment is practically non-existent and the city has more millionaires per head of population than just about anywhere outside Greater London. Aberdeen is also a famous seat of learning, being home to not one, but two world renowned universities - the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordons University. It's a world leader in life sciences and the Rowett Research Centre is really among the primary institutions globally in the area of food and nutritional research.

Aberdeen is also known as the Granite City due to the fact that quite a few of the architectural structures are made from the locally found granite stone. The more romantic residents also refer to it as the Silver City since the granite sparkles in the sunshine. Also called the Oil Capital of Europe or perhaps 'Little Dallas', Aberdeen has, as you might expect, become a major player in the offshore gas and oil industry worldwide. It has also won the Britain in Bloom competition more times than any other city in the UK with a total of ten titles to its name - a fact that the local residents are very proud of.

The local economy continues to buck the trend and performs well above the UK average. This has lead to Aberdeen gaining a reputation as a lively party town and a steady stream of visitors are welcomed every year on their way to the Highlands and Royal Deeside - favorite home to the Royal family.

Thanks in no small measure to the continued strong performance of the offshore gas and oil sector, Aberdeen also punches well above its weight economically. A whole service industry has grown up around the major oil companies and businesses such as Aker, Wood Group and Maersk employ thousands of people and pump hundreds of millions of pounds every year into the local economy. Transport is a key feature of the city with good rail, road and sea links to the rest of the world. Aberdeen International Airport handles domestic and international flights to Europe and beyond and, bizarrely, the city also has one of the busiest commercial heliports int he world with dozens of daily flights to the offshore oil installations. Although the city has seen some new hotels open recently, accommodation still continues to be a bit of an issue, especially during the crew changes offshore, so its always advisable to book well in advance if you are planning a visit. In general, though, its always best to book ahead when planning a stay.

In these difficult economic times, Aberdeen businesses still tend to out-perform the UK as a whole. Organisations such as Enterprise Scotland, The Chamber of Commerce and even networking groups such as BNI and Aberdeen Network continue to promote small businesses and offer a wide range of services and networking opportunities that help stimulate growth and development.

The retail sector is also very strong in the city and the recent building of Union Square has added significantly to the range and diversity of quality shops to be found here.  Not content to rest on its laurels, Aberdeen continues to expand and enhance its facilities. The recently announced City Garden Project, for example , will see the creation of an outdoor auditorium and gardens right in the very heart of the city. Its a bold and innovative project that aims to put Aberdeen back on the map both culturally and commercially.

Aberdeen is, in fact, one of the most exciting and rewarding cities in Scotland, or indeed anywhere, to live and work in right now. The local economy is very strong and people generally have high levels of disposable income so luxury and designer goods and services do well.
